Master of Sainte Gudule

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An old Dutch painter who worked in Brussels at the end of the 15th century is known as the Master of Sainte Gudule .

The artist, not known by name, got his emergency name after a picture of a bishop at the sermon, in the background of which he depicts the view of the Sainte Gudule church in Brussels. One of the towers of the cathedral is still under construction, which, together with the clothing of the figures, allows the painting to be dated to around 1470. The picture is now in the Musée du Louvre in Paris. A few other works are assigned to the master by comparing styles.

Classification of creation

The works of the master of Sainte Gudule are an example of the transition of painting in the Netherlands from Gothic to Renaissance . Her style of painting is still in the iconography tradition of depicting Gothic saints. In contrast to the Italian Renaissance, for example, the anatomical correctness of the figures and the adoption of classic proportions are not yet in the foreground with the master . However, he observes his surroundings more closely and, like the leading Dutch painters of his time, Robert Campin , Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden , depicts nature and architecture in excellent detail. Many of the paintings by the master of Sainte Gudule show buildings from Brussels in the background .

Such naturalistic and architectural representations can also be found, for example, in the depiction of plants and buildings in the background of the pictures of the Ghent Altarpiece by Jan van Eyck; However, a comparison of the main characters shows that van Eyck already seems to be heavily influenced by Italian painting in terms of anatomy and lighting effects, while the master of Sainte Gudule - possibly in order to stay closer to the tastes of his clients - cannot or does not yet want to use the new painting techniques .

Discussion of the note name

From today's perspective, the emergency name Master of Sainte Gudule is not completely correct. It can give the impression that the painter came from the area around Sainte Gudule. Therefore, sometimes more precisely the name Master of the View of Saint Gudule ( English "Master of the View of St Gudula") is used.
