Maestro de Vielha, Altar by Vielha, around 1475, Catalonia

A medieval Spanish-Catalan painter is referred to as the Master of Vielha ( sp . : Maestro de Vielha) . The artist, who is not known by name, painted the pictures of the Gothic high altar in the church of Sant Miquèu in the Catalan city of Vielha in northeastern Spain in the last third of the 15th century . The master is said to have been a student of Pedro García de Benavarre , a painter who worked in Aragon and Catalonia from around 1445 to 1485. He probably had a workshop in Barcelona from 1455 , in which the master of Vielha is said to have learned and in which he was possibly also allowed to help out with some of García's works.

The altar of Vielha shows pictures from the legend of the Archangel Michael , the patron saint of the church. Furthermore, scenes from the life of Mary , the Lord's Supper and Saints Peter and Paul are shown.
