Alberto Iria

Joaquim Alberto Iria Júnior (born December 27, 1909 in Olhão on the Algarve , Portugal ; † February 24, 1992 in Paço de Arcos near Lisbon , Portugal) was a Portuguese historian and archivist.

Life

After attending high school in Faro , he studied history, philosophy, literary studies and librarianship at the University of Lisbon and the University of Coimbra until 1936, and did his doctorate on the history of the French invasion of General Andoche Junot in the Algarve in 1808. After that, he worked initially as archivist in the Ministry of Finance and in the National Library.

From 1946 to 1975 he was director of the Colonial Archives ( Historisches Übersee-Archiv ), together with the Ministry of Finance, he organized several special and anniversary exhibitions. He then became a member of the Academy of Sciences in Lisbon and, in 1984, Vice-President of the National Academy of History (1987 Honorary President).

Iria was the " Commander " of the Order of the Southern Cross and was considered a specialist in the history of his home region, the Algarve .
