Melanie Doane (born December 19, 1967 in Halifax ) is a Canadian singer-songwriter .

Doane, daughter of music teacher J. Chalmers Doane and sister of drummer Creighton Doane , learned several instruments in her childhood, including the ukulele, piano, double bass, violin and mandolin. In 1995 she released her first single titled Melanie . She aroused interest at the Sony Music label , where her debut album Shakespearean Fish was released the following year . She had widespread success with her second album Adam's Rib (1998). She received the Juno Award for Best New Artist and the Canadian Radio Award for Most Charted Rock Artist and had more than 200 appearances in Canada. After Melvin Live (2001), her studio album You Are What You Love was released in 2003 . Her most recent albums are A Thousand Nights (2008) and The Emerald City (2011). With her program Uschool she is committed to extracurricular music lessons in Canadian elementary schools; The ukulele is used as a school instrument.
