The aquamarine rainbow fish ( Melanotaenia lacustris ) is a freshwater fish from Papua New Guinea , also known as the Kutubu rainbow fish . It was first collected in 1955 and scientifically described by the Australian ichthyologist Munro in 1964 .
features
Depending on the water and environmental conditions as well as the food, the aquamarine rainbow fish can show different colors from cobalt blue to steel blue and aquamarine to shades of turquoise. The upper half of the body is most intensely colored. The males are more colored, taller and taller than the females. The fish are about ten centimeters long, rarely up to twelve centimeters.
Occurrence
The Aquamarine Rainbow fish is endemic in Kutubu Lake of and the Soro River, the only outlet of the lake, in the Kikori River system drains. The fish live in groups close to the surface in the crystal clear lake up to 70 meters deep at temperatures of 21 to 25 ° C and pH values of 8.5 to 9.0.

Aquamarine rainbow fish are perpetual spawners. This means that they spawn not only in a special season, such as other fish in the rainy season, but all year round if the conditions are favorable.
Melanotaenia lacustris is an omnivore. All types of live, frozen, flake or green fodder are taken in the aquarium. A varied diet is important.
