Melayê Cezîrî (* 1570 ; † 1640 ) was a Kurdish writer, poet and mystic. Ceziri was born in the Kurdish principality of Botan , which roughly corresponds to today's Şırnak province . Culturally, Botan was the center of Kurmanji literature.

Life

Melaye Ceziri, whose real name was Ahmed, was also called Sheikh Ahmede Ceziri . He was the son of Mela Mohammed and belonged to the Tariqa of the Naqschbandi . His birthplace is not known, but it is believed that he belonged to the Eşiret of the Bohti, who settled in al-Jazira . After studying in Botan's capital Cizre , he made further studies in philosophy, astrology and prophecy in various countries such as Iraq, Syria, Egypt and Persia. Ceziri was influenced by the classical Persian poets Hafiz , Jalal ad-Din Rumi and Jami . Back home, he first taught in Diyarbakir and then went to Cizre for good.

He was buried in the Madrasa Sor.

The most famous work of Melaye Cezire is the Dīwān , which is one of the most important Kurdish works. The divan was first printed for Europe by Martin Hartmann in Berlin in 1904 . It is one of the earliest Kurdish works. There are seven editions of the divan to date, including one by Zivingi. This contains 120 poems and three Rubāʿī . A later edition of Hejar contains 117 poems, ghazals , Kassidas and three ruba'i. According to the scholar Mahmud Bayazidi , from whom the oldest written source on Ceziri comes, the poet was in love with the sister of Prince von Botan and had dedicated many ghazels to her.
