from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Melchior Niedhardt Gronau (* around 1648 ; † 1722 in Brilon ) was a mayor of the city of Brilon.

Life

Gronau was first documented in 1676 as a pharmacist based in the Derker quarter in Brilon. He was the successor of the first pharmacist Theodor Christiani in Brilon. He acted as was customary, with other goods, such Olich (oil), sour (vinegar), soap, butter, cheese, herring, Tran and tar, and perceive all sorts of sugar (confectionery). Pharmacists also often worked as confectioners . Sugar was obtained exclusively from the expensive imported commodity sugar cane . These goods are recorded in the finance books because an excise tax had to be paid for them . Gronau was also active as a beer brewer and brandy seller .

In Brilon he rose to be a respected man. He was a chamberlain and councilor and was elected mayor in 1707, 1712 and 1715. For a long time he administered the church assets as a church provisional. The pharmacy passed into other hands in 1717, reasons are not known; Gronau moved to another part of the city. Evidence of business activities thereafter is not available.
