Maria Sabine Augstein

Maria Sabine Augstein (* 1949 in Hanover ) is a German lawyer who works primarily for the rights of transsexual people.

Life

As the oldest child of German publisher Rudolf Augstein and his wife Lore Ostermann studied Augstein after school law . Augstein underwent gender reassignment surgery in 1977 at the age of 28 . She successfully campaigned for the rights of transsexual people in Germany in various court cases. In 1992, she ordered the bid for the first prominent lesbian couple Hella von Sinnen and Cornelia Scheel , but this was rejected at the time. The registry offices in Germany were only opened in 2001 with the Civil Partnership Act . Augstein has lived with the painter and photographer Inea Gukema-Augstein since 1978, in a registered partnership since 2001 . The couple live in Tutzing . In spring 2015 she was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for her many years of work.
