Meldi (Celts)
The Meldi , also Meldii ( Latin , Germanized Melder ), were a Gallic tribe from the Belgae area . The name of the Meldi has been preserved in the city of Meaux ( Civitas Meldorum ). The original city name was Iantinum . A dedicatory inscription for Atesmerius found there suggests a tribal deity.
The residential area of the Meldi was the lower reaches of the Matrona ( Marne ) in the area of today's Île-de-France , north of Paris ; in their territory Caius Julius Caesar had in 54 BC Build the ships he needed for his second invasion of Britain . They were shallower and wider ships that could be loaded and pulled to the beach faster than those he had used on the previous expedition.
