Melkøya ( German  "Milchinsel" ) is an island off the Norwegian coast near the town of Hammerfest in the province of Troms og Finnmark .

Economical meaning

A facility for the storage and processing of natural gas from the Snøhvitfeltet natural gas field (Norwegian Snow White Field ) in the Barents Sea was built on the island . The system was designed by Linde AG , built in Spain and towed to Norway on a swimming platform. It is the largest of its kind in Europe and takes up the entire island. The gas is transported to Melkøya through a 143 km gas pipeline . At Melkøya it is then processed and made into liquefied natural gas . It is then transported away by tanker . Construction began in 2003. The plant operated by Statoil went into operation in autumn 2007.

After starting in August 2007, the plant was shut down again in November due to technical problems. In the meantime, some of the gas has been flared off, releasing significant amounts of carbon dioxide , nitrogen oxides and carcinogenic soot into the environment. In January 2008, part of the plant went back into operation, with excess gas being temporarily flared off. The first delivery to the United States has now also taken place.

history

In connection with the Statoil building project, an archaeological investigation was carried out in 2001 and 2002. Traces of human settlement from the end of the Stone Age were found, which go back to the end of the last Ice Age .

Before the Second World War , Melkøya was inhabited for about a century. Cows and sheep were kept on a small scale on the island. Along with Hammerfest the island but was forcibly evacuated by German forces and on her a battery of Wehrmacht stationed. The area was fortified with barbed wire and land mines . After the war, the repopulation and continued agricultural use of these fortifications failed and was abandoned in 1951. During the evacuation of Melkøya in the summer of 2002, parts of the buildings and objects left behind on the island were transferred to the Gjenreisningsmuseet (Norwegian Museum for Reconstruction ) in Hammerfest.
