history

In view of the spreading varroa mite in Germany , beekeepers under the leadership of Thomas Radetzki have been meeting regularly at the Fischermühle in Rosenfeld since 1985 to investigate the question of how they can help the bees to cope with the varroa mite. The basis for this was the bee lectures by the Austrian publicist Rudolf Steiner .

On January 6th, 1986 the association was founded in Rosenfeld under the name "Association for beekeeping according to nature". In the first years of the association, the basic development for natural honeycomb construction and for population reproduction based on the swarming instinct was in the foreground of the association's work.

In 1989 the first experiments with oxalic acid to treat varroosis in bees took place in the association's own training and experimental apiary, Fischermühle . The oxalic acid spray process developed there was officially approved in 1993 and has been one of the most important treatments for varroosis ever since.

The operating methods developed by Mellifera formed the basis for the guidelines for Demeter beekeeping in 1995.

In 2003 Mellifera founded the Blooming Landscape Network to provide better food for bees and other flower-pollinating insects.

In 2006 the "Alliance for the Protection of Bees" was created, in which the German Beekeeping Association and other associations are represented. It campaigns (mainly legally) against green genetic engineering and against pesticides .

In 2010 the citizens' initiative “Bees make schools” was founded. With her, Mellifera brings together educators and beekeepers to offer children an opportunity to learn about bees and about bees.

The “Aurelia Foundation” was founded in 2015 in order to campaign politically for bee protection in Berlin.

Awards

On January 25, 2013, the Federal Minister for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, Ilse Aigner, awarded the association's own teaching and experimental beekeeping Fischermühle with the “Organic Farming Award”.
