Melocactus bellavistensis is a species of plant of the genus Melocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet bellavistensis refers to the occurrence near Bellavista in the Peruvian Amazon region.
description
Melocactus bellavistensis grows with glossy dark green, depressed spherical to somewhat elongated and conical shoots that reach heights of 6 to 25 centimeters with a diameter of 8 to 25 centimeters. There are nine to 18 sharp-edged ribs separated by straight furrows . The areoles are sunk into the notches in the ribs. The thorns , which vary in strength and are usually curved downwards, are whitish to reddish yellow and drowned out gray. The central spines are absent or there are one to three, sometimes inconspicuous, 0.1 to 1.7 centimeters long. There are six to twelve radial spines that are up to 2.5 centimeters long. The lowest of them are the longest, the upper ones are 1 to 8 millimeters long. The cephalium , made of creamy white wool and protruding, reddish bristles , is up to 15 centimeters high and has a diameter of 6 to 10 centimeters.
The deep pink flowers are 1.8 to 2.6 inches long and 0.5 to 1 cm in diameter. The red fruits reach a length of 1.5 to 2.9 centimeters.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Melocactus bellavistensis is common in southern Ecuador and northern Peru .
It was first described in 1957 by Werner Rauh and Curt Backeberg . It becomes the two subspecies
- Melocactus bellavistensis subsp. bellavistensis
- Melocactus bellavistensis subsp. onychacanthus (F.Ritter) NPTaylor
distinguished.
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data.
