Melocactus glaucescens is a species of the genus Melocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet glaucescens means 'turning blue-gray-green'.

description

Melocactus glaucescens grows with depressed spherical to pyramidal bodies that reach heights of 13 to 18 centimeters and diameters of 14 to 24 centimeters. The bodies are initially intensely glaucous and light bluish green. They later turn light gray-green. There are 8 to 15 ribs that are very broad at their base. The gray-green tinted brown thorns have a blackish tip. The 1 to 2 ascending, upwardly curved central spines, which can also be missing, reach a length of 1.1 to 2.5 centimeters. The 5 to 8 straight to curved radial spines are between 1.1 and 2.5 centimeters long. The cephalium grows to a height of 10 centimeters and a diameter of 6 to 7.5 centimeters. Its bristles are hidden under the thick, creamy white wool.

The lilac-colored flowers are up to 2.5 centimeters long and 1.6 centimeters in diameter. The sometimes flattened fruits are deep red and 1 to 1.6 inches long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Melocactus glaucescens is common in the Brazilian state of Bahia . It was first described in 1972 by Albert Frederik Hendrik Buining and Arnold J. Brederoo .

Melocactus glaucescens is listed in Appendix I of the Washington Convention on Endangered Species . In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN from 2002, she was as " Critically Endangered (CR) ", d. H. classified critically endangered. In 2013 the species was named " Endangered (EN) ". H. listed as endangered.
