Melocactus perezassoi is a species of the genus Melocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet perezassoi honors A. Pérez Asso, who discovered the species.

description

Melocactus perezassoi grows with occasionally sprouting, light green to yellowish green, almost spherical to egg-shaped shoots that reach heights of 11 to 16 centimeters with a diameter of 10 to 15 centimeters. There are twelve to 13 vertical, sharp-edged ribs . The slender thorns are yellow to honey-colored to brown. The three to four spread, straight or upwardly curved central spines are 2 to 3 centimeters long. The 0.5 to 2.5 centimeters long 14 to 19 radial spines are slightly curved upwards. The cephalium , which consists of thick wool and salmon-colored to orange-red bristles , is 4 to 9 centimeters high and 6 to 8 centimeters in diameter.

The bright pink flowers are 2.3 to 2.8 inches long and 0.7 to 1 cm in diameter. They only protrude 6 to 8 millimeters from the cephalium. The club-shaped, light pink to white fruits are 2.3 to 2.8 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 6 to 8 millimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Melocactus perezassoi is common in Cuba .
