Melocactus stramineus is a species of the genus Melocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet Melocactus stramineus comes from Latin , means 'straw yellow' and refers to the thorns of the species.

Melocactus stramineus grows with medium to dark green to gray- blue , depressed spherical to short cylindrical shoots , which reach heights of 15 to 18 centimeters with diameters of 9.5 to 25 centimeters. There are ten to 18 slightly sharp-edged, straight or slightly humped ribs . The gray or reddish brown to brown thorns sometimes turn black with age. They can hardly be divided into central and radial spines. The one to four central spines are 3 to 4 inches long. The five to twelve radial spines are 3 to 4.5 inches long. The lowest of them are the longest. The cephalium , which consists of numerous bright red to red-brown bristles , is up to 12.7 centimeters high and has a diameter of 8 centimeters. It is at least as wide as half the diameter of the shoot.

The flowers protruding from the cephalium have a diameter of 1 to 1.4 centimeters. The magenta fruits are 3 to 3.4 centimeters long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Melocactus stramineus is common in Aruba .

It was first described in 1886 by Willem Frederik Reinier Suringar . A nomenclature synonym is Melocactus macracanthos subsp. stramineus (Suringar) Guiggi (2010).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
