Music dictation
The music dictation or melody dictation is an exercise for recording or noting musical notes or individual melody lines while listening, and thus part of the ear training in music .
When listening to music, the pupil must immediately reproduce in notation what is being played to him. The music dictation promotes sharpness and certainty of hearing, clarity and speed of comprehension as well as the accuracy and strength of memory. The key and starting tone are usually given.
Astonishing achievements, such as that of the young Mozart , who wrote down Allegri's famous Miserere correctly from his head after listening to it twice, were also accessible to ordinary talents on the path of musical dictation.
The French, in particular Ambroise Thomas, made music dictation a subject of study .
