The Memorial Stadium is a football stadium on the campus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) in Lincoln , Nebraska . It serves as the venue for the home games of the college team Nebraska Cornhuskers , which plays in the Big Ten Conference . The stadium has a capacity of 86,047 and holds the NCAA record of 316 sold-out games in a row. The series began in 1962 and continues to this day.

history

In the fall of 1922, professors, students, alumni and friends of the university raised a total of $ 430,000 to build a new football stadium in Lincoln. The stadium was designed by architect John Latenser, Sr. and named Memorial Stadium to honor the citizens of Nebraska who served in the Civil War and Spanish-American Wars, and the 751 Nebraskans who died in World War I. Later, the stadium would also honor the 3,839 Nebraskans who died in World War II, as well as the 225 in Korea and the 422 in Vietnam.

The construction time of the stadium was only 90 days and on October 20, 1923 the stadium was opened. The original audience capacity was around 31,000. Since then, the stadium has been expanded and renovated six times. At first there was only one western and one eastern side grandstand. Between 1964 and 1972, more seats were built in the north and south curve in four construction phases, thus closing the stadium. After these expansions, the capacity was finally 74,000. During an expansion in 1999, 42 box seats were finally added. The playing area was named after the retiring coach Tom Osborne . The last expansion to date began in 2004 and increased capacity by a further 6,000 spaces to currently 81,067.

Since 1970 the stadium has been played on artificial turf . First the brand AstroTurf was used and since 1999 FieldTurf has been played.

Events

On September 19, 1987, the Charity Concert Farm Aid III took place here, for the benefit of family farms in the USA.
