Mendizabals corner signboard-jewel beetle ( Anthaxia mendizabali ) is a beetle from the family of jewel beetles (Buprestidae).
features
The jewel beetles have the body shape typical of the genus Anthaxia . They reach lengths of up to 6 mm and are bronze-colored. The posterior tibia of the males have small teeth in the basal third on the inside.
distribution
The species is widespread in the Mediterranean. The occurrence ranges from the Iberian Peninsula in the west to Asia Minor and the Middle East (Syria) in the east. In North Africa, the species is represented in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. To the north, the distribution area of Anthaxia mendizabali extends over France and Switzerland to Germany and Luxembourg. The jewel beetle species is very rare in Germany. It occurs there mainly in the heat-favored regions of southwest Germany.
Way of life
The adults appear in spring. They are most commonly seen at the end of May. The beetles usually stay on the flowers of their host plants. These include broom broom ( Cytisus scoparius ) and awl broom ( Spartium junceum ). The larvae develop in dry branches of their host plants.
