The approximately 3.0 m high menhir of Bonvillars is the highest monolith in Switzerland . The menhir is in a vineyard near Bonvillars , a village of 400 people above Lake Neuchâtel . It is located about six kilometers from Yverdon . The menhir is one of several on the north shore of the lake ( Grandson , Pierres Longues de Corcelles). The area was already an important settlement in the Neolithic Age .

The menhir made of gneiss stands north of the road from Bonvillars to Champagne shortly after leaving the village. There is no sign pointing to it, no public path leads to it. It also has no proper name like many menhirs. Two other Swiss menhirs, the Freistein near Attiswil and the anthropomorphic menhir in Bassecourt are better known, although they are smaller. The latter became popular because its installation in the Saint-Hubert pilgrimage chapel testifies to the Christianization of the ancient megaliths .
