The menhir complex of Gardelegen is a prehistoric menhir complex in Gardelegen in the Altmark district of Salzwedel , Saxony-Anhalt , which has only survived in remains . It was only recognized as such in the early 1990s.

location

The menhir complex is located a good 3 km south of Gardelegen on the edge of a meadow surrounded by the hospital forest. This point also forms the transition from the sandy terrain to a boggy lowland.

description

The complex still consists of five larger stones, which are numbered 1 to 5 from south to north. The stones 1–4 form a slightly shifted southeast-northwest running row of 17 m length. Stone 5 is 14 m northeast of stone 4. Alternatively, the position of stones 1, 2, 3 and 5 can also be viewed as a section of a circle 30 m long. According to Lothar Mittag, the system could be the rest of a stone circle . Three or four stones are erected; two have bowls (the largest more than 50, another between 30 and 40), another stone shows traces of abrasion.

Stone 1 is round and consists of red granite . It has a height of 1.15 m, a width of 1.0 m and a thickness of 0.5 m. There are several smaller stones between it and stone 2.

The second stone is roughly rectangular and consists of gray-red granite. It has a height of 1.4 m, a width of 1.3 m and a thickness of 0.7 m. There are other smaller stones directly north of this stone.

The third stone tapers upwards and consists of reddish granite. It has a height of 0.85 m, a width of 0.8.4 m and a thickness of 0.6 m.

The fourth stone is irregular in shape and made of red granite. It has a height of 1.3 m, a width of 0.8 m and a thickness of 0.8 m.

The fifth stone is roughly triangular in shape and made of gray granite. It has a height of 1.2 m, a width of 1.1 m and a thickness of 0.8 m.
