Neraida ( Greek Νεράιδα ( f. Sg. )) Is a village in the Neochori community, Paramythia parish of Souli municipality , Epirus region , Greece . Also known under the name Menina (Greek Μενίνα), which is of Turkish origin, it is a relatively large village with around 300 inhabitants. Neraida is 20 km from the port city of Igoumenitsa . It is located at an altitude of 60 m at the foot of Mount Chionistra on the Kalamas River . A primary school and a high school with a sports field can be found in the village. There are also two petrol stations, a church, a supermarket, bakeries, cafes and restaurants.
history
The Battle of Menina, famous in Greece, took place in the village in August 1944, during which the Greek partisans of the EDES organization, led by Napoleon Zervas, drove the German occupation out of the village. Menina was a headquarters of the German Wehrmacht . Even today, this day is celebrated annually at the memorial in front of the village church, where invited veterans are honored.
