history

Merbag Holding was founded in 1955 by Herbert C. Stüber in Zurich . The roots of their activities, however, go back to 1911, when Benz and Daimler operated separately in Zurich, each with its own branch. After the two automobile companies merged in 1926, the two sales branches in Switzerland became Mercedes-Benz Automobil AG . In 1948, when it was taken over by Herbert C. Stüber, it became the property of a Swiss family; the previous company name was retained. The company sold, maintained and repaired passenger cars and commercial vehicles of the Mercedes-Benz brand in Zurich and Bern. Until 1972, Mercedes-Benz Automobil AG was also the only Mercedes-Benz importer for the Swiss market.

As an umbrella company for its activities, Stüber founded Merbag Holding in 1955. This has since held the shares of Mercedes-Benz Automobil AG. For reasons of space, the headquarters were relocated from Zurich to Schlieren in 1967 . While the main operating subsidiaries of Merbag Holding are still based in Schlieren today, the headquarters were later relocated to Zug .

In the 1970s, the company opened branches across Switzerland and developed into a nationwide group. Merfag AG was founded in 1973 to import Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles . In 1980 there was a clear separation between import business and sales business. The new Mercedes-Benz (Switzerland) AG firmierende Merfag AG took over the former commercial vehicle import, the import of passenger cars, while Mercedes-Benz Automobil AG from then on was run as a pure retail organization.

In 2017 the company expanded abroad. Merbag acquired six Daimler operations in the Italian city of Milan and the entire Mercedes-Benz network with a total of five locations in Luxembourg . The group of companies, including its headquarters in Schlieren ( Zurich ), currently employs around 2000 people at a total of 38 locations (in Switzerland and abroad).
