The market halls of the Mercat de la Boqueria  - also known as Mercat de Sant Josep or simply La Boqueria - are located on La Rambla street in Barcelona ( Spain ). They have an area of 2,583 m² and are made entirely of glass and steel.

history

The market halls go back to a street market that was held on the Rambla. Since 1217 we know of tables that were set up near the former Boqueria city gate to sell meat. From 1470 the pig market was held there in December. The square was still in front of the city gates of Barcelona and other traders also offered their goods there or in the vicinity. At that time the market was called Mercat Bornet or (until 1794) simply Mercat de la Palla ("Straw Market").

The open space was initially surrounded by a colonnade and should also be built on, but it had no official status and was only viewed as an extension of the market on Plaça Nova, which extended to Plaça del Pi. Later, however, it was decided to separate the market and a fish market and stalls for butchers and poultry farmers were built on the Rambla (de Sant Josep).

It was not until 1826 that the street market was legally regulated, and when the convent of Sant Josep was demolished in 1835 , a square was designed in its place, remotely similar to Plaça Reial due to its northern and southern arcades . A year later the construction of a market in the middle of the square was planned. Construction began on March 19, 1840 under the guidance of the architect Mas Vilà. The market was opened in the same year, but changes to the plan were made and implemented again and again until 1846. In 1848, a fish market was finally built behind the Palau de la Virreina.

In 1853 the market became official. In 1911 the new fish market was opened and in 1914 the metal roof as it can be seen today was inaugurated. The famous entrance to the Ramblas market was designed by the architect Antoni de Falguera i Sivilla .
