Mere Hüseyin Pasha

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mere Hüseyin Pascha (* 16th century ; † in July 1624 ) was an Ottoman statesman with Albanian roots. He was Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire in 1622 and 1623 and previously governor of the Ottoman Sultan in Eyâlet Egypt between 1620 and 1622 . He was probably the only Grand Vizier who did not speak Ottoman.

Life

Hüseyin Pascha was born in the middle of the 16th century as a member of the powerful Albanian Begolli family in the İpek region (now Peja ). Presumably he came to Constantinople as part of the boy harvest and attended an Enderun school.

He began his professional career as aşcıbaşı (head chef) of the Ottoman politician Satırcı Mehmed Pasha and soon became a member of the Sipahi Corps. He then took over a number of higher and higher government posts until he was appointed Ottoman governor for the Eyâlet Egypt in July 1620 and promoted to vizier .

As governor of Egypt, Huseyin Pasha was described as "raw and uncouth". During his tenure as governor, the lack of Nile flood in Egypt caused widespread drought that led to his discharge from office in March or April 1622. His defterdar (comparable to the finance minister) Hasan, who temporarily led the business as governor after his departure, accused Hüseyin Pasha of having embezzled money from the state treasury and crops from the granary and prevented him from leaving Cairo. Hüseyin Pascha paid 25,000 gold dinars, which was roughly half the amount in question, and claimed that a local who wanted to denigrate him after he had given up his office should pay the rest because he owed Hüseyin Pascha exactly the amount of the outstanding sum anyway. He was then given permission to leave. However, when the authorities turned to the borrower to collect the money Hüseyin Pasha had lent him, he claimed that he had already repaid everything to Hüseyin Pasha. When this response was sent to Hüseyin Pasha, he claimed he was innocent and that the borrower had lied. However, he agreed to pay the remaining 25,000 pieces of gold if the liar was left to him in return. The incumbent governor accepted this proposal and handed the borrower over to Hüseyin Pascha, who tortured him, killed him and took the 25,000 gold pieces.

After these events Hüseyin Pasha traveled to Rumelia and stayed there for a few months. On June 13, 1622, the Pasha was appointed Grand Vizier by Sultan Mustafa I and served in this capacity until July 8, 1622. The Sultan had to dismiss the Grand Vizier after the Janissaries believed that Hüseyin Pasha had killed their leader Derviş Ağa to let. Lefkeli Mustafa Pascha was then Grand Vizier only for a short time , but was soon replaced by Gürcü Mehmed Pascha . But even he was not in office for long because the Kapıkulu suspected him of not wanting to put down the Abaza rebellion seriously enough. On February 5, 1623, the Sultan reappointed Mere Hüseyin Pasha as Grand Vizier and left him in office until August 30, 1623.
