Hezarpare Ahmed Pasha

Hezarpare Ahmed Pascha , also Tezkereci Ahmed Pascha , (* unknown; † August 8, 1648 in Constantinople ) was an Ottoman statesman, grand vizier and defterdar of the Ottoman Empire .

Life

Ahmed Pasha was the son of a soldier. Unlike his father, he decided against a military career and worked as a government employee after completing his training. Among other things, he was the personal secretary ( tezkereci ) of Grand Vizier Kemankeş Kara Mustafa Pascha , which earned him the nickname Tezkereci . In 1646, around two years after the execution of Mustafa Pasha, he was promoted to defterdar and a year later to grand vizier.

The ruling Sultan İbrahim was considered psychologically abnormal, which also earned him the nickname "the crazy one". The sultan was known for his sexual debauchery and lived a splendid lifestyle. So he loved sable fur coats and forced his grand vizier to buy huge quantities of sable fur for his palaces. As a Grand Vizier, Ahmed Pasha was primarily concerned with looking after the Sultan's amusements and had to neglect the affairs of state. During his tenure, the Navy of Venice was able to block the Strait of Çanakkale ( Dardanelles ) in the war for Crete and Venice took control of the strategically important Klis Castle in present-day Croatia. In addition, the immense purchases of sable furs caused an additional deficit in the state budget, the situation of which was already tense due to the war.

In 1648, Ahmed Pasha levied a heavy tax to cover additional household expenses. However, this move caused anger and turmoil among the population of the Ottoman Empire. The grand vizier was then killed by the Janissaries on August 8, 1648 and torn to pieces, hence the Persian nickname Hezarpâre (German: Thousand Pieces ). Only a few days after Ahmed Pasha's death, the Sultan was also deposed and killed.
