Messa a quattro voci da Cappella (Monteverdi, 1650)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Messa a quattro voci da Cappella , composed by Claudio Monteverdi , was published posthumously in a collection of sacred music in 1650 . The exact date of the composition is not known. It is possible that the mass was created on the occasion of a Christmas mass in San Marco in Venice , since Monteverdi had to compose a mass for Christmas Eve every year during his employment in Venice. However, only two masses have survived from Monteverdi's years in Venice: this one and the Messa a 4 da Cappella contained in the Selva morale e spirituale collection from 1641.

music

It is a four-part mass with basso continuo (usually organ ) in the style of antico . The tonality of the mass is Doric on the keynote G. However, when composing, Monteverdi not only used the stylistic devices of the style antico from the 16th century, but also incorporated newer compositional techniques. This is particularly evident in the virtuosity of the voice set of the vocal duets and trios contained. From a motif in the first Kyrie part, consisting of a descending scale followed by two ascending thirds, Monteverdi gained the compositional basis for the mass. It returns in a modified form, for example in its inversion , in other parts of the fair.
