Messala is a large impact crater on the northeastern edge of the lunar front . It is located northeast of Geminus and south of Schumacher . The crater wall is badly eroded.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the Jewish astronomer and astrologer Māschā'allāh ibn Atharī .
