The Messara horse (also called Cretan horse ) is a breed of horse that is native to the Greek island of Crete . The main distribution area is in the Heraklion regional district , which also includes the Messara Plain , which explains the name of the breed.

Exterior

The Messara horse has a dry physique, a straight head and a medium length back. It has fine long hair, a high tail and a stick height of 120 to 140 cm. The Messara horses are mainly bay, dark bay, black horse and gray horse.

The Messara horses are born with the pace (Greek: Jorga ), which is why they are popularly called Jorgalidka . They are comfortable to sit on, reliable and sure-footed, and fast even on uneven terrain. They serve as light riding and driving horses and are used for light field work and transport. The stallions are also used for breeding mules .

Breeding history

The breed has existed since the year 1000 or longer, during the time of the siege of Crete by the Ottomans, Arab stallions were crossbred. There has been a stud book since 1994 . Around 100 registered specimens of the breed live on Crete, but the Messara horses are also in demand in the rest of Greece.
