The Mass in B flat major (op. 172) is a setting of the Mass by Josef Rheinberger and was composed in 1892. The first edition was published in the same year by FEC Leuckart Verlag in Leipzig , the latest version was published by Carus Verlag in 1987 . It was premiered on February 2, 1894 in the Breslau Cathedral . The mass is written for male choir and organ ; there is also a rarely played version for male choir, wind orchestra (2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets), timpani and double bass.

construction

A performance lasts about 25 minutes. The sentence sequence is:

  • Kyrie (B flat major)
  • Gloria (B flat major)
  • Ave Maria (F major)
  • Credo (G minor)
  • Sanctus (B flat major)
  • Benedictus (D minor)
  • Agnus Dei (B flat major)

The work structure largely follows the ordinarium . Rheinberger also set an Ave Maria in a cappella to music and placed it between Gloria and Credo, with which it would serve as a gradual in a liturgical performance . In the Gloria and Credo, Rheinberger had underlined the basic liturgical provision of this mass by omitting the first lines of verse, which are intoned by the priest during church services. In the middle part of the Credo ( Et incarnatus est ) and in the Benedictus, a tenor soloist is added. The end of the Agnus Dei is marked by the recapitulation of the main theme and the coda from the Kyrie.
