Dormitory Messe para Funcionários Solteiros with later additions in 2016

The historic building Messe para Funcionários Solteiros is located in Dili , the capital of East Timor in the Farol ( Suco Motael ) district. It is on the corner of Avenida Mártires da Pátria and Rua Karketu Mota-ain .

It is a former dormitory for single colonial officials, which was built in 1953 as part of the 1951 development plan ( Plano Geral de Urbanização de Dili ) of the city of Dili. Because of the extensive destruction caused by Dili in World War IIhad suffered, there was a marked shortage of accommodation for Portuguese officials who had been transferred there to rebuild East Timor, which was then a colony of Portugal. The ground-floor, rectangular building with eight spacious single rooms was built according to plans drawn up by the Portuguese architect Mário de Oliveira in 1952. Each of the eight rooms had a smaller anteroom and its own terrace, but not its own bathroom. In the immediate vicinity of the dormitory there were military accommodations with corresponding dining rooms and shared bathrooms, which were shared by the officers living here.

The building, which is also known under the name of Antiga Messe de Oficiais , has been externally changed over the decades due to numerous additions due to the strong population growth in the city, but is still clearly recognizable as a building from the colonial era. The hipped roof with the red tiles, visible from afar, towers over the low houses in the neighborhood, one of which has stone decorations on the roof that are typical of Portuguese architecture of the early 20th century. Opposite is the park Jardim 5 de Maio .
