The Avenida Mártires da Pátria ( German  Street of the Martyrs of the Fatherland ) is a main street in the Vera Cruz administrative offices of the East Timorese capital Dili . It has a length of about 1.4 kilometers.

Surname

The street name is intended to commemorate the victims of the struggle for the independence of East Timor against the Indonesian occupation (1975-1999). Until 2015, today's Avenida Dom Ricardo da Silva was called Rua Mártires da Pátria . Today's Avenida Mártires da Pátria was called Estrada de Balide , which is now called Avenida de Balide in the south . The street was named after Dilis' Balide district , where Avenida Mártires da Pátria and Avenida de Balide meet. In colonial times the street was called Av. Mouzinho de Albuquerque , after the Portuguese colonial officer Joaquim Augusto Mouzinho de Albuquerque .

Integration monument in Jardim 5 de Maio

The Avenida Martires da Pátria start at the port of Dili in Suco Motael , in the district of Farol . It branches off from Avenida de Motael to the south, west past the Jardim 5 de Maio city park and the old fair para Funcionários Solteiros , a former dormitory for unmarried colonial officials. After crossing the Avenida Nicolau Lobato , it crosses the Suco Colmera . To the west, Rua de Loriko branches off to the Tais market, then Rua de Colmera and Rua da Jutiçia are crossed. After Avenida 20 de Maio , Suco Caicoli is on the east side and Suco Vila Verde is on the west side . The Rua de Caicoli leads away to the east and the Rua da Catedral diagonally to the northwest . On the west side is the former base of the UN troops in East Timor, the Obrigado barracks . It follows on the east side the Rua de Mascarenhas Vera Cruz and thus the district of Balide . A little off the beaten track is the Church of the Conception of Mary in Balide. Here the street curves to the east and becomes Avenida de Balide .
