Measuring telescope

A telescope is referred to as a measuring telescope that is not used to view an object, but to measure its position or to measure the angle of individual points. Occasionally, it is also used for the precise reading of scales .

From around the middle of the 17th century, especially by Adrien Auzout and Jean Picard , astronomical measuring instruments were equipped with telescopes to increase accuracy - e.g. B. the wall quadrants for measuring star passages . Geodetic instruments and theodolites followed from around 1720, when magnifications of 20 to 30 times could also be achieved with shorter telescopes.

In the following century telescopes were also developed for the precise alignment of axes, machines and cameras, for plumbing and for measuring distances .
