MetNet landing concept

MetNet is a Finnish - Russian Mars program in which space probes are to be used to drop several small landers on Mars, which are to establish an observation network for research into the atmosphere , structure and meteorology of the planet. The program is led by the Finnish Meteorological Institute. The Russian space company Lavochkin is responsible for the system technology . Other project partners are the Institute for Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Spanish space organization Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial (INTA).

A first flight ( precursor mission ) with only one or a few countries should take place by 2019. The earliest possible start time would have been 2014, when the start window to Mars opens again. A flight as a secondary load of the Russian Mars mission Fobos-Grunt starting in November 2011 was considered, but discarded for weight reasons. With further missions, several dozen countries are to be dropped.
