Institute for Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences
The Institute for Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences ( Russian Институт космических исследований Российской Академии Наук (ИКИ РАН) , IKI RAN ) is the research facility of the Russian Academy of Sciences for Space Research .
The institute conducts research in the fields of astrophysics , planets , solar physics , the sun - earth relationship, cosmic plasma and non-linear geophysics . Together with the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Russian space agency Roskosmos , the IKI conducts scientific space research programs. It also develops and tests new space technologies.
Originally, the institute was founded in the Soviet Union on May 15, 1965 by Decree # 392-147 of the Council of Ministers of the USSR as the Institute for Space Research of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR ( Russian ИКИ АН СССР , IKI AN SSSR ). In 1992 the name was changed. The institute is located in Moscow and has 290 scientific staff.
