Metabolic marking

In biochemistry, metabolic labeling is a form of molecular labeling in which the molecular labeling is incorporated into the metabolism (metabolically). Metabolic labeling is mostly carried out by feeding cell cultures or test animals with the labeled molecule or its precursor. If the feed does not contain the unlabelled molecule, not all molecules of this type have a label after metabolic labeling. Therefore, both variants are present in the same organism or in the same sample. The efficiency of metabolic labeling of proteins depends on cell viability and the associated protein biosynthesis .

Metabolic labeling can be carried out as isotope labeling (e.g. 15 N, 18 O or 35 S) or as bioorthogonal labeling . The pulse-labeling is a variation of metabolic labeling.
