Metin Yüksel (activist)

Metin Yüksel (born July 17, 1958 in Bitlis , † February 23, 1979 in Istanbul ) was a Kurdish Islamist political activist. To this day, he is venerated as a martyr by numerous Muslim organizations. He was one of the most important leaders of the Turkish Islamist movement in the 1970s, and was also a member and local chairman of Akıncılar Derneği in Fatih, Istanbul, a militant Turkish-Islamic organization that was involved in the escalation of violence in Turkey.

Yüksel was born in the eastern Turkish city of Bitlis as the son of Sadrettin Yüksel , a well-known and respected Islamic clergyman. Little is known about Metin Yüksel's personal early life. Yüksel grew up during the turbulent times between the 1960s and 1970s. One of his six brothers was Edip Yüksel . At that time, Turkey was hit by bloody clashes between political groups.

On October 26, 1977 , he and three friends of eight left-wing people attacked him and seriously injured him in front of the Darüşşafaka High School in Istanbul. He was hit by three bullets, two in the abdomen, but survived the confrontation and was admitted to Gureba Hospital. On February 22, 1979 there was an exchange of fire between Akıncılar and nationalists. Yüksel came under barrage from a group of five nationalists and went down. The attackers then shot him in the head. Yüksel was buried in Edirnekapı on February 25th.

On the occasion of his death, there were large rallies by Islamist circles.

Metin Yüksel is revered as a martyr in Islamist circles. Annually commemorative events are held to mark his death. The month of February was also declared a month of martyrs because of the murder of supporters of political Islam. Several books have been published in his memory.
