The Agia Trias Cathedral ( Greek Αγία Τριάς , Holy Trinity ') in the Limperich district of Bonn - Beuel is the metropolitan church of the Greek Orthodox Church in Germany , which is organized as the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Germany .

history

From 1963 the Greek Orthodox metropolis had its seat in Bonn-Beuel. At the latest in the 1970s when Bonn, the capital of the Federal Republic of Germany, broke away from the provisional arrangement, the metropolis made the decision to build the metropolitan center with a church in the city. The central location in the old Federal Republic of Germany should not have been insignificant in the decision, after all, there were very few Orthodox churches in Germany at that time.

Church services or events were attended by numerous personalities, for example in 1998 by Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl and Federal President Roman Herzog at a service in honor of Metropolitan Augoustinos . Even after the relocation of the seat of government to Berlin in 1999, the question of relocating the metropolitan area did not arise.

architecture

Today's church building was built in 1976/77 according to plans by Klaus Hönig and consecrated at Pentecost 1978 by Metropolitan Irineos . The ocher brick cathedral is a central building on the plan of a Greek cross . An octagonal dome rises above the crossing . The church holds about 400 people. It is one of the earliest examples of postmodern architecture in Germany.

The painting of the church by Christophanis Voutsinas took 23 years and was only completed in 2010. The paintings take up an area of more than 600 m².
