Augoustinos Lambardakis ( Greek Αυγουστίνος Λαμπαρδάκης , real name Georgios Lambardakis , born February 7, 1938 in Voukolies on Crete ) is Archbishop and Metropolitan of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Germany and Exarch of Central Europe of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople .

Life

After attending primary school in his hometown and studying theology at the seminary in Chalki ( Heybeliada near Istanbul ), he went on to study in German-speaking Europe, namely Salzburg , Münster and Berlin . In Münster Lambardakis studied with Joseph Ratzinger, the later Pope Benedict XVI.

Augoustinos was ordained priest in 1964 by the then Metropolitan Polyefktos (Finfinis) ( Greek Πολύευκτος Φινφίνης ) in Eitorf near Bonn. Until 1972 he worked as a parish priest in divided Berlin and was also responsible for looking after the Orthodox communities in the eastern part . This year, he was by the Holy Synod of the vicar bishop elected the Metropolitan of Germany with the title of Bishop of Elaia. His ordination on March 26, 1972 was the first Greek Orthodox episcopal ordination on German soil.

After the resignation of Metropolitan Irineos Galanakis , he was elected as his successor on September 29, 1980.

Metropolitan Augoustinos is an honorary doctor of the Catholic-Theological Faculty of Bonn . Since 2006 he has also been chairman of the Commission of the Orthodox Church in Germany and, since 2010, of the Orthodox Bishops' Conference in Germany , the association of all Orthodox dioceses in this country.
