The metropolitan area of Washington (Engl. Washington Metropolitan Area or National Capital Region ) is the seventh largest metropolitan area of the United States .

In addition to Washington, DC, it includes several counties in the bordering states of Virginia , Maryland and West Virginia . In 2010 about 5.6 million people lived in this area. The metropolitan area is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Northern Virginia Combined Region .

The region's economy is characterized by its proximity to the political center of the USA. Many companies whose business is based on government contracts (e.g. defense industry ) have their headquarters here. The service sector is another economic factor , while production and agriculture play a subordinate role.

The entire metropolitan area generated a gross domestic product of 509.2 billion US dollars in 2016, making it fifth among the metropolitan areas of the USA and one of the largest urban economic areas in the world. The unemployment rate was 3.2 percent and was thus well below the national average of 3.8 percent (as of March 2018).
