Metrorrhagia
Metrorrhagia is the medical term for acyclic bleeding from the uterus outside of the normal menstrual cycle . It is referred to as intermenstrual bleeding. If this bleeding continues for more than 14 days, it is called menometrorrhagia. They often occur in adolescence and during perimenopause .
The causes of metrorrhagia can be:
- Hormonal dysfunction (including adolescence and menopause )
- Fibroids
- Endometrial cancer
- Extrauterine pregnancy
- Polyposis
- Spotting while taking birth control pills
- Intrauterine device
- Injured vessel (e.g. iatrogenic )
- Spotting after menopause
Especially in women over 40 years of age who have metrorrhagia or menometrorrhagia, the possibility of endometrial cancer must always be considered. If you have repeated metrorrhagia or menometrorrhagia, you should undergo a gynecological evaluation with removal of the endometrium from the uterine cavity and examination of this tissue under a microscope.
