Metsatöll is an Estonian folk metal band. The term "Metsatöll" is an old Estonian euphemism for wolf , which can be found in the rough song lyrics. A large part of the band's traditionally influenced songs are about the wars of independence of the 13th and 14th centuries.

Metsatöll was founded as a trio in 1998 and played epic heavy metal with influences from ancient Estonian folklore . In the same year the band released their debut album Terast mis hangund me hinge ( Eng .: "Frozen steel in our souls"). In the year 2000 Varulven joined the band, who had already observed their musical activities for a long time and occasionally played in live performances. Varulven also came up with the idea of ​​mixing heavy metal with old Estonian folk. Since then, Metsatöll have been integrating old Estonian singing and traditional melodies into their music.

In 2001 bassist Tins left the band in order to be able to devote more time to his private life. A little later a new bass player was found in Piirsalu. A year later, Metsatöll released the single Hundi Loomine and recorded a video. Hundi Loomine received numerous positive reviews in the local media. In early 2004, drummer Factor was replaced by Atso, and the band released their second album Hiiekoda at the end of the year , which was also well received by the media and fans.

The new album Ulg was released on November 1st, 2011 .

On October 1st, 2012 a DVD / CD named Tuska was released via Spinefarm Records .
