Meyer's Bitter is a bitters from Stadthagen , which has been distilled in a family tradition since 1853.
history
Georg-Ernst Eduard Meyer came from a long-established Stadthagen family and had spent a few years as an apprentice in Hanover until he returned to Stadthagen in 1825 at the age of 20. He became a citizen three years later and the guild accepted him. In contrast to his ancestors, who all ran junk and merchant companies, Meyer began with the production of vinegar . The production facility was house no. 77 on Obernstrasse (later no. 52–54), which had been in the family's possession since 1656.
But he wanted more. The merchant applied to set up a distillation and factory for the finest liqueurs. In the application he wrote: “ ... including a liqueur factory, which has not yet existed here. Our country is now being provided with liqueur etc. by foreign travelers from Oldenburg and Hanover. "
The request was granted and the new manufacturer got down to work. In 1852 the first product from the new liqueur factory was ready for series production. A name was quickly found for the universal brandy: "Meyer's 52er".
Origin of the bitter
In the next year a "Bitter" saw the light of the still. 40 herbs from the Bernese Alps formed the basis for the drink. Eduard E. Meyer also had a customer base in mind. The shape of the bottle and parchment still indicate that the "bitter" should make you healthy. He wanted to sell it as medicine. So he put it in a bottle that was supposed to be like a conventional container for medicine. He was busy supplying hospitals, not only with Meyer's Bitter, but also with Meyer's 52er, which, Meyer later wrote, “has already found its way into several clinics as breakfast schnapps”. But the licensing authorities were not convinced by Meyer's idea to allow the bitter as medicine despite the essential oils it contains.
Current
Meyer's Bitter is still sold in Stadthäger Obernstraße and can be found in every supermarket in Schaumburg . Meyer's Bitter is sometimes drunk nationwide.
Since 1999 the brand has been distributed by the company Schwarze & Schlichte GmbH & Co. KG, based in Oelde, Westphalia. In 2013, the Paderborn-based MBG Group took over E. Eduard Meyer GmbH and thus also the manufacture and sale of the Meyer's Bitter brand.
