Michaël Levinas (also Lévinas; born April 18, 1949 in Paris ) is a French composer and member of the group l'Itinéraire (the route).

Michaël Levinas is one of the representatives of spectral music .

Life

Michaël Levinas was born in Paris as the son of the Franco-Lithuanian philosopher Emmanuel Levinas . He studied composition with Olivier Messiaen and piano with Yvonne Loriod . From 1975 to 1977 he was a fellow at the Villa Medici in Rome. In 1982 he took part in the Darmstadt summer courses under mentor Karlheinz Stockhausen . Since 1992 he has been a professor at the Paris Conservatory .

Along with Gérard Grisey , Tristan Murail and Roger Tessier , he is one of the founding members of the Paris ensemble L'Itinéraire, founded in 1973 . He consciously prefers so-called “dirty” or hybrid sounds in his works.

Levinas has been a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts since 2009, succeeding Jean-Louis Florentz .
