Michael Benedicks

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Michael Benedicks (* 1949 ) is a Swedish mathematician who studies analysis and dynamic systems. He is a professor at the Royal Stockholm University of Technology .

Benedicks received his doctorate from Harold Shapiro at the Royal Technical University of Stockholm in 1980 ( Support of Fourier transform pairs and related problems on positive harmonic functions ). In 1989 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study . In 1991 he became a professor at the Royal Technical University.

With Lennart Carleson in 1991 he showed the existence of strange attractors in the Hénon image . From the analysis of the difficult proof, Benedicks, Quidong Wang and Lai-Sang Young developed the theory of chaotic rank 1 attractors.

In 2007 he became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences . In 2002 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Beijing (Non-uniformly hyperbolic dynamics: Hénon maps and related dynamical systems).
