Michael Crawford (historian)

Michael Hewson Crawford FBA (born December 7, 1939 in Twickenham ) is a British ancient historian and numismatist . He is the author of the standard work on the coinage of the Roman Republic, Roman Republican Coinage (RRC).

Michael Crawford was taught at St Paul's School and Oriel College , Oxford. He became a fellow at Christ College, Cambridge in 1964. From 1969 to 1986 he was a lecturer in ancient history. From 1986 to 2005 he taught at University College London , where he has been retired since 2005. His scientific work deals with the Roman Republic, the coinage of the Roman Republic and the sources of ancient history. He has been a Fellow of the British Academy since 1980 and a member of the Academia Europaea since 1995 .
