Michael Douglas AS (* 1940 in Portsmouth , Dominica ; † 30th April 1992 ) was a politician of the Dominica Labor Party (DLP) from Dominica.

Life

Michael Douglas, son of a wealthy entrepreneur and coconut farmer, studied mechanical engineering and was elected for the first time as a candidate for the Dominica Labor Party (DLP) in the elections on March 24, 1975 as a member of the House of Assembly , the lower house of Dominica. There he represented the constituency of Portsmouth until after his re-election on July 21, 1980, July 1, 1985 and May 28, 1990 until his death on April 30, 1992 .

Shortly after his first election as MP, Douglas was appointed on March 31, 1975 by Prime Minister Patrick John as Minister of Agriculture, Lands, Fisheries, and Cooperatives in his cabinet. After a government reshuffle, he took over the post of Minister of Communications, Works and Hydraulics in 1976 .

After the DLP lost power in the elections on July 21, 1980, under Douglas, with the support of former Prime Minister Oliver Seraphin and former Minister Henry Dyer , the Dominica Labor Party was rebuilt from 1984 , which in 1985 merged with the United Dominica Labor Party (UDLP ) and the Dominica Liberation Movement Alliance (DLMA) merged to form the new DLP. He became party chairman, but was defeated in the elections on July 1, 1985 and May 28, 1990, Prime Minister Mary Eugenia Charles of the Dominica Freedom Party (DFP). After the DLP was the second strongest force in the elections on July 1, 1985 with four seats, he became opposition leader . He held the position of Leader of the Oppositionion until the election on May 28, 1990 and was then replaced by Edison James , whose United Workers Party (UWP) won six seats. After he died of cancer on April 30, 1992, his younger brother Roosevelt "Rosie" Bertrand Douglas took over as chairman of the DLP.

His marriage to Olive “Nurse” Douglas gave birth to his son Ian Douglas , who has also been a member of the House of Assembly since 2005 and has been a minister in various departments. In his honor, was the Michael Douglas Boulevard along the Picard River in Saint John named.
