Patrick John

Patrick Roland John (born January 7, 1938 ) is a Dominican politician. Between 1974 and 1979 he served as Prime Minister of the Caribbean island.

John began his political career as a successful union leader and as mayor of the Dominican capital, Roseau . After the surprising resignation of Prime Minister Edward Oliver LeBlanc , John was appointed as his successor on July 27, 1974. During his tenure, Dominica gained independence from Great Britain on November 3, 1978 .

The economic problems, not least caused by corruption and personal gain, forced John to resign on June 21, 1979. In 1981 he failed with the plan to overthrow the government of Prime Minister Eugenia Charles with the help of members of the Ku Klux Klan . John was sentenced to twelve years in prison for his involvement in this coup attempt, which was called " Operation Red Dog " by those involved . After his release from prison, John, who had once played on the Dominican national soccer team, became a soccer official. He was elected President of the Dominica Football Association (DFA) in 1992. Under his leadership, the DFA became a member of FIFA in 1994 . He served the DFA as President until 2006. In 2007 he was in the Hall of Fame (Hall of Fame) of the CONCACAF selected. In 2008 he was again President of the DFA. In November 2011, he was banned from FIFA for involvement in a FIFA bribery scandal.
