Skerritt was nominated for the successor on January 7, 2004, one day after the death of his predecessor Pierre Charles , and sworn in one day later in this office. Previously, he was Minister of Education in Charles' cabinet.
Since October 22, 2007 he also held the office of Foreign Minister, which he handed over to Vince Henderson on November 18, 2008 . On January 4, 2010 he took over this office again.
