Michael Foster

Sir Michael Foster (born March 8, 1836 in Huntingdon , † January 28, 1907 in London ) was a British physiologist and botanist . Its botanical author abbreviation is " Foster ".

Life

Foster studied medicine at University College London and graduated with an MD in 1859 . From 1861 to 1866 he worked in his father's practice in Huntingdon. 1869 he succeeded Thomas Henry Huxley at the Royal Institution , a year later he was appointed to the newly created Department of Physiology at Trinity College of Cambridge University called.

Foster was a co-founder of the British Physiological Society in 1876 . In 1878 he founded the Journal of Physiology , of which he was editor until 1894. In 1896 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 1902 to the American Philosophical Society . 1903/1904 he was Vice President of the Royal Society .

Foster was mainly as Iris known of the breeders. He crossed the diploid species Iris pallida and Iris variegata or their hybrids with tetraploid species from the Middle East and thus created the modern varieties of the bearded iris. Species bred by Foster such as MRS. HORACE DARWIN, CATERINA and CRUSADER are still in stores today.

Honors

In 1888, Baker named Iris fosteriana Aitchison & Baker in Transactions of the Linnean Society of London after him. Botany. London 3 (1): 114, 1888 and in Curtis's Botanical Magazine 118, t. 7215. 1892 In the following year, in 1889, Baker named the Galanthus fosteri brought by M Foster from Amasia in Asia Minor

On the occasion of the royal Birthday Honors in 1899 he was awarded the title of Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB); henceforth he was allowed to be dubbed Sir Michael Foster.
