Michael Friedrich (doctor)

Michael Friedrich (* 1966 in Wadern ) is a German gynecologist , professor and director of the Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics at the Helios Clinic in Krefeld . His clinical and research focus is on the surgical and drug treatment of all gynecological malignancies, including breast cancer .

Life

Friedrich studied human medicine from 1985 to 1991 at the Medical Faculty of the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg . Since 1988 he has been a member of the Catholic student association KDStV Hercynia Freiburg im Breisgau . Following his studies, he completed his specialist training as a gynecologist until 1997. In 1999 he was appointed senior physician at the University Women's Clinic in Homburg / Saar. He received his license to practice medicine in 1992. In 2003 and 2004, Friedrich worked on scientific observations at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center , New York, at the Northern Gynecologic Oncology Center, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead , Great Britain and at the Istituto Nazionale per lo Studio e la Cura die Tumori, Milan and European Institute of Oncology. In 2003 he became senior physician in charge and in 2004 deputy clinic director of the University Women's Clinic at the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein , Lübeck campus. In 2007, the Helios Klinikum Krefeld appointed Friedrich as Director of the Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics with a Breast Center, Gynecological Cancer Center, Continence Center, Endometriosis Center and Perinatal Center Level I as well as the Center for Prenatal Medicine. Since 2009 he has headed the Gynecology and Obstetrics specialist group at Helios Kliniken . In 2000 he became a member of the Mamma organ committee of the Gynecological Oncology Working Group and played a key role in the development of guidelines for the treatment of breast cancer. Since 2010 he has been a member of the ethics committee of the Medical Association of North Rhine-Westphalia and since 2012 a member of the board of the Federal Association of Leading Doctors in Gynecology and Obstetrics (BLFG). In 2016 he was appointed to the internationally renowned Society of Pelvic Surgeons due to his expertise in the surgical treatment of gynecological malignancies. Friedrich completed his habilitation in 2000 on the subject of vitamin D metabolism in gynecological oncology at the University Women's Clinic Homburg / Saar and in 2005 was appointed adjunct professor for gynecology at the Medical Faculty of the University of Lübeck .

Contributions to science and research

Friedrich undertook experimental investigations into the metabolism of vitamin D and prostaglandin in gynecological oncology. He was the first to demonstrate the vitamin D receptor in vulvar cancer and its precursors, which had clinical implications. He also focused on the role of the DNA mismatch repair system in the pathogenesis of breast cancer and in the development of chemotherapy-induced resistance. This was followed by prospective studies to evaluate BoneTRAP as a serum marker for bone resorption and to monitor oral Bonefos therapy in osseous metastatic breast cancer and post-aggression metabolism after various gynecological surgical procedures. He devoted a special focus of his research to ovarian cancer. So Friedrich evaluated the effectiveness of new chemotherapy agents in the treatment of human ovarian cancer - xenografts . and the benefits of hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy in ovarian cancer .

Friedrich was or is a member of the editorial board or the advisory board of International Journal Clinical and Experimental Obstetrics and Gynecology (1999), European Journal of Gynaecological Oncology (2004), Scientific Advisory Board of the International Institute of Anticancer Research (2004), International Journal IN VIVO (2007), ISRN Obstetrics and Gynecology (2010). Friedrich is also active as a reviewer for scientific journals, including the European Journal of Gynecological Oncology, European Journal of Cancer and the European Journal of Gynecology, Ostetrics and Reproductive Biology.
